At Least 98 Palestinians Have Perished in Detention Since October 2023, Statistics from Israel Reveals

According to data released by Israel, no fewer than 98 detainees from Palestine have died while in custody beginning in October 2023. A human rights group located in Israel has stated that the actual number is almost certainly substantially larger, due to hundreds of unaccounted for detainees originating in Gaza.

“Despite this mass number of fatalities, during 24 months not one individual has been detained,” the official noted. “There have been no prosecutions over any fatality.

“As long as these practices continue to be enforced, all Palestinian detainees in detention faces risk, even the those in good health, including the youth who have no underlying conditions.”

Notable Incidents

Some deaths in confinement have been high profile, such as a senior healthcare leader who perished in detention after four months in confinement.

A prisoner detained alongside the victim testified that he was brought to the yard by guards immediately preceding his demise, obviously hurt and unclothed from the lower body. His remains has not been returned to Gaza.

Other prisoners who perished in Israeli custody stay unnamed. The prison service and military supplied researchers with the figure of casualties in custody, and limited other details such as the site where they died, but not the detainees’ identities.

Documentation Problems

For 21 instances, mainly detainees from Gaza, analysts could not to correlate the few details given by officials to a death recorded by advocacy bodies, either through testimony from freed prisoners or reporting in the press.
