The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.
The figure of positions added to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.
Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that showed that costs are going up, although slowly. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
