Space Traveler Reveals Depression In the Wake of Wave of Backlash Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her battle with depression after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also included celebrity crewmates.

The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, referring to a phone call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the journey.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to female health science and operated research during the flight, said everything she had worked for – from her studies and years of training to the personal milestone of her roots – was overshadowed under the tide of misogyny.

She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after an attack during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she said.

She noted that even with the backlash, important benefits had come out of the experience, including elevated attention for her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

About the Mission

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that passed the edge of space.

The diverse crew also comprised experts in different industries.

The company behind the mission is a private space firm established by a well-known tech mogul.
