Educational institutions in northern Nigeria have often been targeted for armed groups

Armed assailants have taken the life of an instructor and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an assault against a girls' secondary school in Nigeria's northwestern region, police reports indicate.

The armed faction invaded the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on Monday, authorities reported.

The armed individuals "engaged police personnel on duty in a firefight" before climbing over the boundary wall and abducting the learners from their living quarters, according to a statement.

One member of staff was lost their life while safeguarding the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now undergoing medical care.

Witnesses reported a sizeable number of assailants, referred to locally as criminal elements, who came shooting randomly to generate terror.

Community members disclosed to media that the gunmen subsequently marched a number of girls into nearby bushland.

The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "supplementary tactical squads, together with army members and community security teams" to the area.

A coordinated search and rescue operation is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and suspected escape routes.

In the last several years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have regularly come under attack for militant organizations, who frequently execute kidnappings to seek ransom payments or gain negotiating power with authorities.

The incident in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency plaguing the region, resulting in households in Maga in a state of fearful exhaustion as they anticipate and pray for their daughters' safe return.
