The former England manager Reveals Direction on Mentoring Young People Over Football Management

Gareth Southgate has made clear that he is not pursuing a return to football management, pointing out that it would be tough to match the special mission he felt as the national team coach.

He expressed his plan to focus his energy toward engaging the youth and combating what he called a widespread pessimistic outlook now found in the country.

Exploring Fresh Opportunities Beyond Football

Speaking on air, the manager was questioned on rumors linking him with vacant management roles in the top flight and abroad.

“I’ve had one of the most incredible jobs in football which also had a higher purpose because it was my country,” he replied. “It will be tough to match that experience. After nearly four decades in the game, I’m now exploring new fields where I can contribute positively.”

Dedication to Positive Examples

Ahead of the launch of his forthcoming publication, his new work on leadership, the author emphasized that he is deeply committed about offering guidance for the youth, applying lessons from his tenure as England’s men’s football manager between 2016 and 2024, as well as his personal family life.

He feels that his experience coaching England, during which the team transformed from being strongly criticized to broadly loved, holds broader applications.

“Initially, the relationship with supporters was severely strained,” he noted. “Many perceived the squad as arrogant, but we managed to change that perception. I witnessed firsthand how the team could unite individuals from all backgrounds.”

Parenting and Guiding Young People

Reflecting on his role as a parent, he commented: “You want to give your kids the best possible start, but there is a point when they don’t want to listen to parents any more. I experienced that in my house in the same way everybody else will … but I do think this is an important space for us.”

He continued: “There’s a negative narrative around our country at the moment and we’ve got to give young people hope, we’ve got to give them guidance. We’ve got incredible talent but we need to them to find the right role models, the right friendship groups because those decisions have such a big impact on the rest of their lives.”

Common Ground Above Conflict

He stressed that “the British people share more commonalities than differences” but that the societal attention often centers on disagreement.

“The reasons for public dissatisfaction are clear,” he commented. “Financial struggles affect numerous communities, fueling calls for transformation. Yet, I’ve observed the capacity to bring the nation together. During the pandemic, I witnessed neighbors helping each other—that’s when the UK excels, demonstrating strength and unity in adversity.”

Southgate’s new release, Dear England, is set to present deeper reflections on guidance and public spirit based on his distinguished career.
