The Israeli government Approves 19 New Communities in Contested Palestinian Territories

Israel's security cabinet has voted to recognize the establishment of 19 fresh communities in the contested West Bank, marking a ongoing push for community development.

Hardline Treasury Chief Bezalel Smotrich, who lives in a settlement and advocated for the step in concert with Defence Minister Israel Katz, stated that the decision was about blocking the creation of a sovereign Palestine.

Under international law, Jewish communities in the disputed territories are deemed illegal.

The announcement has sparked criticism from Saudi Arabia. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has commented that Israel's "unceasing" settlement expansion exacerbates tensions, restricts Palestinian access to land, and undermines the prospects of a sovereign Palestinian state.

Rising Tensions and Diplomatic Repercussions

Clashes in the occupied West Bank has surged since the war in Gaza erupted in October 2023, further heightening fears that settlement expansion could deepen Israel's occupation and damage the possibility for a peaceful resolution based on two states.

The two-state solution involves the creation of a State of Palestine in the Palestinian territories, with East Jerusalem as its seat of government, broadly along the boundaries that existed before the 1967 Middle East war.

Since taking office in 2022, the incumbent Israeli government has ramped up the authorization of new settlements and initiated the process of legalization for unauthorised settler outposts, recognising them as "neighbourhoods" of existing communities.

Ongoing Expansion

The most recent approval brings the total number of settlements approved over the last three years to sixty-nine, according to Smotrich.

These decisions arrive only a few days after the United Nations said that construction in settlements had reached its peak since the year 2017.

The latest group of authorizations features the revival of two settlements — Ganim and Kadim — which were dismantled almost two decades ago.

In a previous move, Israel gave the nod to 22 new settlements in the occupied West Bank - what was the most significant wave of approvals in many years.

Additionally, the government gave the go-ahead for blueprints last summer to build over 3,000 housing units in the controversial E1 area between the capital and the Maale Adumim community, a plan that had been frozen for decades amid strong global condemnation.

At that time, Smotrich said it would "end the idea of a Palestinian state."

Population Facts and Global Response

Roughly 700,000 Israeli settlers dwell in about 160 settlements in the occupied territories, as per data from the Israel-based monitoring organization Peace Now. This is territory that Palestinians seek for a future independent state.

This ongoing construction has drawn ire from neighboring countries who have repeatedly contended it erodes hopes for a two-state solution.

It has furthermore sparked fears about the eventual formal annexation of the occupied West Bank.

Former US President Donald Trump had once admonished the Israeli leadership about annexation, telling TIME magazine that the country would lose its backing from the US if it happened.

In a diplomatic shift, the United Kingdom - joined by other nations including Australia and Canada - recognised a State of Palestine, a notable although largely symbolic change in official stance.

The Israeli government strongly rejected this step, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asserting that a Palestinian state "will not happen."
