The megacity Awakens to Dangerous Smog Following Diwali

On Tuesday morning citizens of this heavily contaminated metropolis encountered breathing severely hazardous air that registered in the "severe" category.

Record-Breaking Air Quality Levels

Various sections of the city registered an pollution measurement above 500, which represents 10x the safe level recommended by the global health authority.

Certain monitoring stations, levels of toxic particulate matter reached peaks of eighteen hundred, equating to 15 to 20 times above safe standards.

Pyrotechnics Restrictions and Current Policy Shifts

Beginning in 2020, officials had implemented a complete ban on the sale and use of firecrackers during Diwali due to their substantial impact to the dangerous smog that engulfs the capital as the cold season approaches.

However in recent months, the newly elected city government approached the highest court to request a modification of the restrictions.

Officials advocated for allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – which have been doubted by conservation groups as being only about 30% less polluting – as a balance between "heritage and ecological concerns".

Much to the frustration of public health and environmental activists, judicial authorities agreed to the proposal, stipulating that green firecrackers could be used during specific periods throughout the Diwali.

Throughout the festival evening, there was considerable disregard of the designated hours across the capital, with minimal enforcement regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly type.

Several air quality sensors throughout the capital registered pollution spiking around the night hours to the most severe measurements recorded during celebrations in at least three years.

Cross-Border Consequences

The widespread use of firecrackers during Diwali also initiated a controversy with adjacent the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistani Punjab province partly blaming deteriorating atmospheric conditions in Lahore on pollutants originating in neighboring India following the events.

Chronic Pollution Crisis

Alarmingly severe levels of atmospheric toxins in the capital have continued as a serious problem for over a decade and a half, with the situation showing no improvement.

During the festival period, the concentration of hazardous particles in the environment has been documented to shoot up to 70% higher the worst readings ever measured in China's capital, which was formerly viewed as the globally most contaminated urban center.

Multiple Contamination Contributors

The problem in the capital is attributed to a combination of multiple factors including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, development work, garbage fires and pollutants from crop residue ignition in neighbouring areas of farming communities.

Throughout these areas, rural residents illegally set their fields on fire to prepare for next season, producing toxic haze that remains stagnant over the metropolitan area as winter air sets in.

Medical and Financial Impact

Both financial and medical toll on the nearly 33 million inhabitants living in the capital region is enormous, according to numerous studies.

The contaminated air leads to increased incidence of nervous system, heart and circulatory and lung diseases, and can even lead to malignancies.

Air quality crisis is estimated to be responsible for ten thousand early fatalities each year in the city.
