What We Know Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Shooting

A minimum of 16 individuals lost their lives and over 40 sustained injuries when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities have called a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the death toll remains at 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 injured people were admitted to medical facilities.

Those who died have not yet been publicly named, but authorities state their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the individuals who have been named to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the attack, stating they were standing when the shooting started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, a senior official declared that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was also killed in the incident, according to reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, many remain under care, with five in serious condition. The injured comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
